about

Seoul-based Guitarist, professor, musical philosopher Zach Hahn is one of the first childhood teachers of Mung Music Label's founder Sunjae Lee, and in this album, he explores standard jazz tunes in a highly adventurous and deconstructed/reconstructed approach with nods to ideas in physics and philosophy. The stripped down intervallic angular melodies are foils for oceanic improvisations in both solo (Particles and Forces Suite, based on Body and Soul) and duo settings, accompanied by drummer Doheon Lee in the latter half of the album.
____

"The physics of sound as a phenomenon or a physical property determine the outcome of musical event, but the manipulation of the signal (output) is a key to understand the intention of the artist. The meanings the artist intends to convey/express and perhaps communicate with the audience are bound by the physical property of the final outcome, regardless. Also, the audience will try to interpret the outcome utilizing all faculties available to him/her in symbolic, structural, emotional, academic, and experiential contexts, which may or may not encompass or reach beyond the whole scope of the work. This seemingly inevitable duality or parallel experience of listening to “new-to-us” music reminds me (and hopefully the audience) the quantum nature we find in the physical world in which we apparently appear to be convinced of co-existing.

Due to technical difficulties associated in conducting controlled experiments involving fermions and bosons, with expectations to produce repeatable results and empirical data of any credibility in our basement, within an hour on a Tuesday evening, we decided instead, to make a live jazz album using an old-school, raggedy-assed, Tascam 4-Track tape recorder.

Turns out alternating current and electromagnetic fields were not much friendlier to us either. But we like old-school songs, played and recorded in the old-school way: no rehearsal, one-take only, and no editing, perhaps not as much as writing run-on sentences, but still like them enough. Heck, a careful listener might even be able to hear some music amidst the crackles and noise, not to mention particles and forces."

양자물리학적 현상의 규명은 어려울 것 같아서 그냥 저렴한 구식 아날로그 장비로 도헌이와 연주나 해봤습니다. 잘 들어보시면 노이즈와 잡음사이에 혹시 음악도 있습니다.

Mung Music Seoul, South Korea

Mung is a Korean expression "멍" roughly translated as "spacing out", a process during which our conscious minds step back and allow our subconscious minds to take over, much like what happens in the art of improvisation. MM focuses on improvised and original music from Seoul, Korea and is mainly recorded using a vintage Tascam 424 cassette 4 track recorder. All artwork by Sunjae Lee. ... more
